FAQs

How does Orthofeet® provide support for hammer toes?
We feature a wide toe box which can help prevent irritation. Our shoes also have extra depth to help prevent your toes from rubbing against the tops of the shoes. Lastly, the interior of our shoes is made with soft, cushioning materials that can help to eliminate pressure points. This can help to prevent pain and discomfort.
Can shoes help with hammer toes?
Yes, shoes can help with hammer toes. The right shoes can provide support and prevent the toes from becoming more crooked.
Which shoes fit a hammer toe?

There are a few things to look for when choosing shoes for hammer toes:

  • A wide toe box that gives your toes plenty of room to spread out.
  • Good arch support that distributes your weight evenly and prevent your toes from becoming too stressed.
  • A cushioned sole that absorbs shock and protects your feet from the impact of walking and running.
  • A flexible sole that allows your toes to move naturally.
  • A low heel, as high heels can put extra stress on your toes and make hammer toes worse.
How do I protect my hammer toes in my shoes?
Here are some things you can try: Choose shoes with stretchable uppers that conform to the shape of the foot and ease pressure on hammer toes. Wear a toe separator, a small, plastic device that is placed between your toes. It can help to keep your toes from rubbing together and becoming more crooked. Take breaks when you are on your feet for long periods of time to reduce pain and inflammation.
Can wearing flip-flops cause hammer toes?
The development of hammer toes is a complex process influenced by various factors, including genetics, foot structure and footwear choices. While flip flops alone may not be the sole cause of hammer toes, their lack of support can contribute to the progression of the condition. Additionally, when walking in flip flops the toes often grip the shoe to keep it in place, straining the muscles, tendons and ligaments in the toes, which may contribute to the development of hammer toes.

Shoes That Work With Hammer Toe-Affected Feet

Hammer toes occur when the middle joint of a toe becomes stuck in a bent or curled position, creating a prominence on the top of the toe that conventional shoe toe boxes press against during walking. The resulting friction and pressure cause the calluses, corns, and persistent irritation that people with hammer toes manage every day. A standard-depth shoe with a shallow toe box is often the primary aggravating factor: it forces the bent toe into contact with the upper from above, turning an ordinary footwear fit issue into a daily source of discomfort. Orthofeet hammer toe shoes are built to eliminate that friction at the source by providing the depth, width, and material flexibility the hammer-affected foot actually needs.

Features That Accommodate Hammer-Affected Toes

Every Orthofeet hammer toe shoe is engineered around the specific fit requirements that hammer toes create. Extra depth throughout the toe box provides vertical space so that the bent toes do not make contact with the upper during walking and standing, eliminating the primary source of friction and irritation. A wide, roomy toe box allows the toes to rest naturally in their bent position without lateral compression adding to the discomfort. Stretchable uppers accommodate the unique three-dimensional shape of hammer-affected toes, conforming to the foot without resisting the prominence or creating pressure points against it. A seamless, padded interior protects sensitive skin from secondary friction. Anatomical arch support and Arch Booster technology maintain proper foot alignment and reduce forefoot loading that can compound toe stress. Removable insoles accommodate custom orthotics, and wide and extra-wide widths are available.
