How does Orthofeet® support AFO braces?
Orthofeet® shoes are designed by a team of specialists including podiatrists and biomedical engineers. They are meticulously designed with special features that can accommodate various foot conditions, including conditions requiring AFO’s and braces.

Our features include:

Heel straps – innovative stretchable hook and loop straps allow adjustability for a looser or tighter fit making them ideal AFO shoes.

Wide design – a wide shoe shape design from heel to toe provides a relaxed fit.

Extended widths - Orthofeet® specializes in wide width footwear offering shoes in wide, extra wide, and even-extra wide widths in some styles.

Wide toe box – generous toe box design with wide and round shape promotes a pressure free environment and maximum toe movement.

Extra depth – deep shoe construction with removable orthotic insole comfortably accommodates custom orthotics, AFO’s and braces.

Finding Shoes That Work With Your AFO Is a Real Challenge

Anyone who wears an ankle-foot orthosis knows that standard footwear simply wasn't designed with a brace in mind. The AFO adds volume that most shoes can't accommodate without forcing, compressing, or creating painful pressure points between the brace and the shoe. Adjustable fastening becomes difficult or impossible when brace hardware is in the way. Rigid interiors create friction against the brace shell that travels to the skin beneath it. And for those whose conditions involve reduced sensation, any of these contact points can cause damage before it's even noticed. Finding shoes that genuinely work with an AFO rather than around it has historically meant compromising on fit, support, or both. Orthofeet's shoes for AFO braces are built to change that.

Designed Around the Demands of AFO Wear

Every pair in this collection is constructed with the specific requirements of AFO compatibility in mind. Extra-depth construction provides the interior volume needed to accommodate the brace without crowding the foot, while wide and extra-wide widths ensure the shoe can close properly around the added bulk of the orthosis. Adjustable closures allow for a customized fit that accounts for brace placement and can be modified easily, even with limited hand dexterity. Soft, seamless interiors eliminate pressure points and friction between the brace shell, the shoe, and the skin, and non-binding materials ensure nothing constricts circulation or creates sustained contact where it shouldn't. Advanced cushioning absorbs impact during movement, providing additional comfort for feet that may already be managing underlying conditions.

Why Orthofeet for Shoes to Wear With AFO Braces

Orthofeet has spent over 40 years engineering orthopedic footwear that accommodates the full range of what feet and devices require. Every pair in this collection is podiatrist-recommended and backed by a 60-day wear test, so you can assess the fit and function alongside your specific brace during your real daily routine before you commit. When your footwear and your brace work as a system, you move better.
